Pyynikin Brewhouse

Overview

Pyynikin Brewhouse is a very pleasant, dog-friendly pub and restaurant offering a solid selection of their own draft beers alongside a menu full of hearty and well-prepared dishes. It’s a place we’ve returned to regularly for both drinks and meals, and while the food is perhaps not quite at the level of Gastropub Tuulensuu, we’ve always left satisfied.

Atmosphere & Dog-Friendliness

Housed in a beautiful old building, the indoor space is warm and welcoming, with a traditional pub feel. We’ve found the booth-style tables by the windows particularly convenient when we’ve had our dog with us. In summer, the canal-side terrace and large beer garden offer lovely outdoor seating options—perfect for a drink in the sun. The staff have always been friendly and professional, and dogs are clearly welcome throughout.

One downside is that the opening hours have become quite limited recently, which is disappointing given how enjoyable the place is.

Food

The menu leans toward meat and fish dishes, with only a few vegetarian options. There are around five starters (plus snacks like garlic bread and fries) and more than fifteen main courses. Over several visits, we’ve tried a good range of items—meatballs, fish and chips, pan-fried fish, ribs, schnitzel, and burgers, among others—and everything has been well prepared and enjoyable.

The beetroot medley, spicy ribs, and veal schnitzel were particularly good on our latest visits, though we found Tuulensuu’s pork schnitzel a bit more flavourful. The fish in the fish and chips is battered fresh to order and compares well with other local offerings like Sailor’s—different in style, but equally good.

We’ve always felt the food here is very good value for money, considering the quality and portion sizes.

Drinks

The draft beer selection is strong (we usually stick to this), but the cocktails and wines have impressed as well. A Negroni and a gin & tonic enjoyed out on the summer terrace were both excellent, and a recent South African red wine was also very good.

Summary

Pyynikin Brewhouse continues to be a favourite for us thanks to its relaxed setting, good food and beer, and very welcoming staff. It’s especially enjoyable inside on colder days and out on the terrace in summer. The only real downside is the current limited opening hours, which can make visiting tricky. That said, when it is open, it’s well worth a visit—with or without your dog. Highly recommended.
