Original Sokos Hotel Viru, Tallinn

We have stayed twice at the Original Sokos Hotel Viru in Tallin, and overall are happy to recommend it for people travelling with pets, especially if you also have a car. However, if you prefer to be on the other side of town, or prefer not to stay in “large chain” hotels, see the review of Hestia Hotel Ilmarine.

The staff were very friendly and efficient both times, it is in a great location (easy to get to by car from the ferry port, convenient to get into the old town, close to a park for the dog, and seconds away from the Viru Food Court, and the rooms were comfortable, but the room we were given on the second visit was very small.

On our first stay, the room was spacious enough and had an amazing view of the harbour area, the bed was very comfortable, and there was piping hot water and good water pressure in the shower. The bedroom, bathroom, and linen were all clean, and there is a mini fridge (not stocked), but there was no tea and coffee making facilities, and only very small glasses.

On our second visit, the cleanliness and amenities were the same (no tea or coffee facilities), but this time, the room was very small. The lack of space made it quite difficult; not even enough space to keep suitcases open, nor anywhere to put clothes. On the second visit, we were on the other side of the hotel, so while we did not have the harbour view, there was a lovely view of the city, and all up, due to the efficiency of the staff, the cleanliness of the room, comfort of the bed, and location, we had a nice stay, so would still recommend it.

As noted above, the staff were very friendly and efficient. For example, check in was easy, they helped us with parking, and in the evenings, I asked for an ice-bucket from the bar and it was provided both times (different staff) with no fuss or judgement.

For those thinking about staying with dogs, there are number of things worth noting. First, we think there is a limited number of dog-friendly rooms, so it is best to book in advance and make sure to make a note that you have a dog at the time of booking. Second, in terms of price, if you have an S-Card, there is no charge, otherwise it costs €15 per night for pets, which is reasonable, but unlike many other hotels we have stayed in, the hotel does not provide a “welcome package”: no snacks or poop bags. Next, we are not sure of the actual policy, but when we had a drink in the bar, nobody objected to us having the dog, and they are also allowed in the hotel restaurant (Amarillo). Finally, the hotel is a minute walk from quite a large park, so it is very convenient and comfortable for walking your furry friend(s).

Overall, we had a nice stay here on both occasions, and the only real issue was the size of the room on our second stay, thus we will definitely go back. A solid 3-star dog-friendly hotel in a good location of Tallinn.
