Trains in Finland (VR)

Since Bertie has joined us on our travels, we have used the VR trains (Finnish national rail company) quite frequently and have found VR to be very dog-friendly, easy to use, and efficient. We have so far used the trains to visit a couple of cities (Turku and Pori) and to get to and from Helsinki airport.

We hope the details below will be helpful to those planning journeys or trips with their furry friends.

First, it is very easy to book a journey with a pet; just select the correct carriage and add the pet to your booking, which can me made via the homepage, mobile app, or by phone. Another positive feature is that it is very cheap in our opinion; €5 for any journey. Then, once on the train, while there are no special provisions for pets, the trains are clean and there is plenty of room. While we have never used it, there is usually a food carriage on board serving sandwiches, snacks, some hot meals, soft-drinks, and alcoholic beverages. Finally, we have always found the trains (before and since having Bertie) very punctual and quite frequent.

All in all, a very convenient, efficient, and cheap dog-friendly train service.
